Working with the same client over multiple projects is full of rewarding and exciting moments as we get to see a home evolve and change over time to better suit the needs of a family. In this multistage whole home remodel in Cannon Falls MN we got the opportunity to refinish this client’s basement, kitchen, living room, bedrooms, and bathrooms, as well as two separate pole barns.
As an experienced remodel contractor, Great Northern Builders is no stranger to making the best out of each and every one of these rooms. With a whole home remodel, we were flush with opportunities to create a unique and cohesive space to make the client happy.
A Cozy Basement Remodel To Kick Things Off
We started the whole home remodel with an update to the blank slate of a basement. This was a perfect place to start our Rural Realty project as it gave us free rein to pack a number of great features into the cozy space.
A basement bedroom with walk out French doors was added to provide extra living space. This was paired with a full bathroom so that the extra room can operate as a full guest suite.
A hidden storage space was placed cleverly behind a moving bookshelf that provides practicality and whimsy. A secret passageway is sure to entertain and dazzle family and guests.
A compact but well equipped home bar was installed to turn this basement into an entertainment space. Fitted with two temperature controlled beverage coolers, no one is bound to be thirsty.
Knotty alder upper and lower cabinets from Scandia Custom Cabinets provide ample space to display liquor bottles, while hanging racks make an elegant show of glass stemware. This setup makes it easier than ever to grab a drink.
When the bar is combined with the nearby recreation room, this basement remodel quickly becomes an underground lounge. The space is uniquely defined by gorgeous reclaimed wood ceiling beams courtesy of Manomin Resawn Timbers, and accented all around by the warm tones of natural wood.
A modern, electric fireplace helps to warm the room, situated under the entertainment nook and big screen TV. Reclaimed wood shelves fill out the walls, ready for decoration and bringing their own timeless character.
This basement remodel also gave us the opportunity to relevel the floors and seal some previously leaky areas that were causing mold and mildew. While we were in the floors, we also installed in-floor heating to make the whole basement comfortable in the colder months.
This family room is full of potential for good times had with friends and family alike. A basement lounge is the perfect spot to hang through a cold Cannon Falls MN winter.
The Whole Home Remodel Commences On The Main Level With A Kitchen Update
We started on the main level by gutting the house down to the studs. This gave the opportunity to expand the kitchen from a cramped area with limited room and connectivity to a beautiful and open space.
An outdated half wall and corner pantry were removed to both open up the room and create additional counter space. Soffits around the ceiling define the new kitchen and frame out new cabinets also from Scandia Custom Cabinets.
The whole room is finished in dark browns with darker stainless steel appliances. Black marbled counters from Pro Concrete Countertops match the darker upper ring of cabinets and trim that line the ceiling.
The brand new Thermador induction stove sits before a bold blackened steel backsplash that gives a strong industrial look. A convenient pot filler and custom exhaust system from Vent-A-Hood complete the cooking nook that occupies the middle of the kitchen.
A wide basin sink in slate black stands out against the bright windows on one side of the kitchen. Gray herringbone tile from Kate-Lo Tile covers the counter backsplash, adding another layer to the tempered color scheme of the room.
Continue The Whole Home Remodel In A Bright Living Room
The living room, just off the kitchen, was also in need of a facelift. The walls and floors were completely ripped down – even the fireplace was removed, ready for a new insert.
The room was refinished in a minimalist fashion, prioritizing natural light and bright colors to reflect it. Walls painted in West Highland White and and Coretec Oak Luxury Vinyl Plank floors hold onto the sunshine for a room that feels like it could be outdoors.
A brand new 42” electric fireplace from Twin City Fireplace was installed in place of the outdated gas model that had been there before. A classic stone surround was installed, along with a custom wood mantel from Forever Barnwood.
The TV wall was updated, removing unneeded soffits and adding lower cabinets to increase the much needed storage space. The wall was painted an attention grabbing pewter green that continues down the hall to the master suite.
Updated Exteriors For A True Whole Home Remodel
We took our work outside to give a full update to the exterior of the structure. New building materials will help improve the efficiency and function of this home as it battles the harsh weather in Cannon Falls MN.
We replaced the windows and doors all throughout the house with Andersen E Series fixtures – their top of the line product that offers the best performance. With the new glass in place, this home is ready to weather the elements in full natural light.
The walls were resided with LP Smartside paneling with Diamond Kote finish to make the home invincible against the rough weather and age. An attractive two-tone pattern was adopted in the panels to make the home stick out against the landscape.
To top things off, The roof was refinished in GAF asphalt shingles in pewter gray to match the color scheme of the siding. All together, this rural home has become an impenetrable fortress against the elements, keeping its residents safe against anything Minnesota has to throw at them.
Making Use Of the Property With Pole Barns
This rural tract has plenty of land around it for the owners to make use of. Pole barns were the perfect way for these homeowners to take advantage of the space, but the two existing structures needed major updates.
The horse barn was in need of a new roof and siding, which were both done in steel. The interior was reframed and structural trusses had to be replaced.
Outside, this one needed help with the landscaping as well. We regraded and added a retaining wall, allowing for better ease of access and less worry about further structural problems.
The second pole barn was also in deep need of some reworks. The old framing was rotting away, and the siding was failing.
We reframed the entire interior and installed a new overhang to help battle the elements. More steel siding and roofing were applied to update the overall weather resistance of the structure, and the garage doors were replaced.
Now this barn is a perfect, modern workspace with plenty of room for tools and vehicles. The whole space is protected from the elements, proving comfortable conditions all year round.
