Who We Are
Great Northern Builders (GNB), one of Apple Valleys premier remodeling contractors, has a rich history rooted in family values and craftsmanship that spans several generations. As a family-owned leader in residential construction and remodeling, as well as commercial construction and restoration, GNB has built a strong reputation in the Twin Cities metro area and western Wisconsin.
Founder Chris Biljan’s journey began at the age of 13 when he first stepped into his grandfather’s woodworking shop. It was here that he absorbed the intricate skills of building, designing, and fabricating, guided by the legacy of his family.
Chris’s father later took on the family business, instilling in him a passion for quality and service. Now, with over 25 years of industry experience—15 of which have been dedicated to Great Northern Builders—Chris leads a talented team from the same shop built by his grandfather nearly 50 years ago.
Overall Scope and Design
During the remodel, we focused on improving the home’s look and functionality. One of the main updates was changing the crown molding from traditional oak to a smooth enamel finish, giving each room a fresh, modern feel. We also worked on new tile at the entryway to create a welcoming first impression for guests. The existing oak hardwood flooring was carefully restored to keep its character while refreshing its appearance.
We replaced all doors and millwork to maintain a consistent design throughout the home, ensuring everything reflects quality. To finish the transformation, we installed new lighting, choosing fixtures that provide both illumination and style. These updates come together to create a space that balances beauty and practicality, making the home unique.
Kitchen Remodel Details
In our kitchen remodel, our main goal was to salvage and restore as much of the existing cabinetry as possible. We aimed to blend functionality with aesthetics, creating a space that serves both daily activities and entertaining. We installed a stunning backsplash and a quartz countertop, adding elegance and durability to the kitchen.
Additionally, we transformed the kitchen lighting with carefully chosen fixtures that illuminate the space effectively while aligning with the contemporary design theme, creating a welcoming ambiance. Throughout the renovation, we prioritized quality materials and skilled craftsmanship, reflecting our commitment to excellence.
Living Room Remodel Details
In the living room, we undertook several key updates to enhance both the aesthetic and functionality of the space. First, we removed the popcorn ceilings and went back with light texturing.
Furthermore, we dismantled the existing cabinetry and mantle at the fireplace, allowing us to install custom panels and a new mantle sourced from Manomin Resawn Timbers. This thoughtful upgrade not only elevates the visual appeal of the living room but also pays homage to natural materials, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for gatherings and relaxation.
Primary Bath Remodel Details
The primary bath underwent a complete gut renovation, resulting in a refreshed look that aligns seamlessly with the overall design of the house. We installed a new double vanity, offering ample space for his and her sinks, and transformed the area with a walk-in shower featuring a large glass door and an elegant tile design. To enhance comfort, we added corner seats, ensuring this bathroom is not only stylish but also practical for aging in place, making it a perfect fit for their forever home.
Secondary Guest Bath and Bedroom Updates
In our remodel project, we focused on refreshing the secondary guest bath and updating two additional bedrooms on the second floor to create a welcoming and functional space. We completely transformed the guest bath by replacing old fixtures with modern ones, improving both its look and usability.
A new vanity with ample storage was installed, along with a contemporary sink and faucet that match the home’s design. Calming tile work gives the space a fresh feel, and upgraded lighting creates a warm, inviting atmosphere for guests.
