Exterior Remodeling Project
This late 80’s home underwent a complete transformation to meet the homeowners’ needs for a more functional and stylish exterior. The original rough-sawn cedar siding had weathered over time, and the cramped front porch needed an upgrade to make the space more usable and inviting. In this exterior remodeling project in Inver Grove Heights, our homeowners wanted an expanded porch for seating, a striking timber and beam focal point, and low-maintenance materials that still offered a natural, cohesive aesthetic to match the home’s interior.
To meet these needs, we extended the porch depth by removing the old structure and building a larger, open-air design with a new roofline, boosting both functionality and curb appeal. Trex decking was chosen for its durability and low-maintenance nature, while factory-finished LP Smartside siding provided a wood-like appearance with added durability and warranty benefits. The ceiling features circle-sawn pine treated to achieve a weathered look, complementing the natural elements of the design.
The centerpiece of the project is a stunning 14-foot clear-span truss made from hand-hewn Douglas Fir timbers salvaged from the historic West Publishing building in Downtown St. Paul. This custom-designed and assembled truss adds character and history to the home, creating a true conversation piece. Transporting and crafting this 1,500-pound feature presented challenges, but careful engineering and on-site assembly ensured its seamless integration into the design.
To enhance the overall aesthetic, we incorporated multiple siding colors and styles, reclaimed white oak trim around the entry door, and eye-catching faux wood garage doors. Custom lighting, including smart Wi-Fi-controlled landscape and deck lighting, was added to improve safety and create a warm, inviting atmosphere.
As with any exterior remodeling project, challenges arose, including structural surprises and electrical repairs common in older homes. Careful planning and craftsmanship overcame these hurdles, resulting in a stunning transformation that exceeded the homeowners’ expectations.
