Minnetonka “Man Cave” Shed

A Backyard Retreat

More and more homeowners are looking to create personalized spaces that offer comfort, privacy, and a little peace—without ever leaving home. For this 1918 St. Paul property, the homeowners wanted just that: a backyard retreat where they could relax, entertain, and recharge. With one family member working from home and varying schedules, the idea of a “Man Cave” quickly took shape. The nearly half-acre lot gave us the perfect canvas to create a standalone structure that complements the charm of the original home while delivering modern comfort and function.

We carefully selected a mix of natural and low-maintenance materials—natural cedar, reclaimed softwoods, and rich exterior colors—to help the new space feel like it had always been there. Inside, the retreat is filled with thoughtful details: a commercial-style powder-coated garage door and architectural windows bring in natural light, while reclaimed wood from Manomin Resawn Timbers adds warmth on the feature wall and ceiling beams. A custom steel-wrapped fireplace, sealed concrete floors, and handcrafted cabinetry offer durability and style. We even included an eco-friendly incinerating toilet to avoid the need for sewer hookup—saving water and space. Whether used for hosting small gatherings or enjoying a quiet moment alone, this project is a great example of how custom design can elevate your everyday space—right in your own backyard.

Project Obstacles

This “Man Shed’s” biggest hurdle was getting materials in on time during the Covid-19 pandemic and creating a safe and private retreat during that time. The structure needed to look as though it had always belonged on the almost half-acre lot, blending in with the home’s character while incorporating natural and low-maintenance materials. Space planning was a challenge, requiring a design that felt open and inviting despite its compact footprint, complete with ample light, custom finishes, and all the client’s wish-list features. The addition of a bathroom posed another hurdle, solved with an eco-friendly incinerating toilet to avoid costly sewer and water extensions while saving gallons of water annually.
