This late-‘80s home in Inver Grove Heights got a much-needed exterior upgrade to improve both curb appeal and everyday function. The original cedar siding had weathered over time, and the small, enclosed porch no longer fit the homeowners’ needs. They envisioned a more welcoming entry with space for seating, low-maintenance materials, and a natural look that tied into the home’s interior. We took the home’s dated exterior and gave it a fresh new identity—complete with timeless materials and custom architectural details that make a lasting impression.
We removed the existing porch and built out a larger, open-air design with a new roofline for better flow and function. Trex decking and factory-finished LP Smartside siding offered durability with a wood-like look, while the circle-sawn pine ceiling added warmth and texture. The showstopper? A 14-foot clear-span truss made from reclaimed Douglas Fir timbers salvaged from St. Paul’s historic West Publishing building—designed, engineered, and assembled on site. Additional touches like reclaimed white oak trim, faux wood garage doors, layered siding styles, and Wi-Fi-controlled lighting pulled everything together. Despite the typical surprises that come with remodeling older homes, the result is a beautifully updated exterior that feels right at home in the neighborhood—and gives the homeowners a space they’re proud to welcome guests into.
Project Timeline: 3 months
This late-80s home’s exterior transformation was quite complex. The original cedar siding had suffered years of wear, and the smaller porch needed to be replaced with a larger, more functional design. Incorporating a custom 14-foot, 1,500-pound Douglas Fir truss salvaged from the historic West Publishing building required careful engineering, transportation, and on-site assembly. As with many older homes, structural issues and required electrical repairs were present during the remodel, adding to the challenge. Despite these hurdles, precise and craftsmanship delivered a durable, low-maintenance, and visually striking exterior that met the homeowners’ vision for improved functionality and style.
