Spa Mentality

A Serene Primary Suite Transformation Designed for Everyday Luxury

Project Overview

This early-1990s primary bath had remained unchanged since the home was built and no longer met the homeowners’ needs. The goal was to transform the space into a spa-like retreat that felt cohesive, open, and functional across the bathroom, bedroom, and walk-in closet. Key wish-list items included a large walk-in shower with dual shower heads and controls, a shaving niche, modern tile, heated floors, ample storage, and a soaking tub.

To achieve this, the layout was reimagined and mechanicals were relocated to allow the spaces to flow together seamlessly. All new fixtures, lighting, tile, cabinetry, and countertops were carefully selected to elevate both form and function. A palette of soft whites and greys paired with clear alder cabinetry adds warmth and balance throughout the bath.

A custom his-and-hers closet was designed directly within the bathroom, a must-have requirement for the homeowners. The primary suite also received a full refresh, including removal of popcorn ceilings, new trim and doors, fresh paint and carpet, and the installation of an Andersen patio door leading to a private rear deck overlooking the pool. In the bath, a new Andersen window was added at the tub location, flooding the space with natural light and providing a peaceful view while soaking.

Project Obstacles

One of the primary challenges was creating a properly sized walk-in shower while still accommodating a large soaking tub. This was resolved by opening up the bathroom floor and reworking the plumbing, relocating the toilet, and reorienting the shower from its original location.

Removing the oversized tub deck and dated drop-in jacuzzi tub also allowed for the addition of a true dual vanity—previously the space had only a single sink. Additional storage was achieved by shifting walls, opening doorways, and eliminating unnecessary doors. Vanity tower cabinets were incorporated to provide generous storage for linens and everyday personal items, keeping the space both functional and uncluttered.
